When I first listened to ‘Stand’ from the Disney Channel Original Movie ZOMBIES, I loved how it’s message is so relevent movements including Time’s Up and MeToo today. Disney was clever in creating a kid-friendly story with a strong message of segregation. I was genuinely moved by this musical sequence in which a character makes the first step in standing up to discrimination by revealing her genetic disorder. Loads of artists are releasing singles featured in movies-look at Keala Settle’s hit This Is Me. It got me wondering how to market this particular song.
So I was inspired to do this original brief as my first ever music album cover. My concept, while strongly defient was stil muted, considering the power ballad more of a personal first step rather than a full out declaration of revolt.
I wanted something that was in sync with current trends-minimal, edgey and sleek. I took a black and white photo of the singer and actress Meg Donnelly that could work with against light and dark background.
Still wanting to acknowledge the Disney Channel brand and its young target audience I took the primary colours of neon pink and lime green used in the film title for the typelock. Inspired by graffiti I scribbled with pink and green marker to scan and overlay with a handcrafted font for the song title. For other text I kept the typography small and discrete.
I created the basic layout in both black and white, though admittedly the typography worked better in the black backdrop. Roll out includes the album playing on Spotify, as well as a record sleeve and poster advertising the single’s release.
Have to say I am really proud of this brief, how I created something that’s bold and striking while working with brand guidelines, promoting the artist and her talent. And I just love how the type lock pops! Definitely one of my personal favourites up to now!
